Predator and Prey

I wish that my trigger finger had been just a hair quicker so that I could catch the whole squirrel, but at least you can see his shadow. He was just as surprised as I was to see this hawk on our deck. The squirrel had been happily munching away at my birdfeeder until the hawk showed up. Funny, though, it seemed the hawk was more afraid of the squirrel than the other way around.

I have been totally overwhelmed again lately. Sorry I've been so lousy about commenting on your photos. I do visit every time I have a few free minutes. I hope you all are well and I hope to "see" you more soon.

Dramatic moment, and you caught a great piece of it. The drama of the escaping squirrel and the hawk's surprise translates well in this photo. A squirrel could take a nice chunk out of a hawk's leg, so the bird is wise to be cautious.

You may not have caught the whole squirrel, but it's a superb shot of the hawk, and somehow, only the shadow of the squirrel gives it a real feeling of "Quick Getaway" !!!

very cool catch - the shadow and legs out of the frame are almost as powerful an image as if you would have captured it in the frame

I agree w/the others who spoke of the shadow being a very strong part of this image and the surprised look on the hawk's face is a winner. Great work, Willow. This is definitely a 5***** image, and thanks to its showing on on AM3'sTwitter page, I got here as quickly as I did!
