Sampson

This is the newest member of our family, Sampson. He is a miniature mule that we adopted from Horses Haven, an animal rescue farm. He's likely to rapidly become the most photographed mule in town.

I have been totally overwhelmed again lately. Sorry I've been so lousy about commenting on your photos. I do visit every time I have a few free minutes. I hope you all are well and I hope to "see" you more soon.

Oh, he is so beautiful. We have a vacation cabin in the local mountains. Years back there were wild burros all over the area. They would come up to the porch and eat out of our hands. Then about 5 years ago the forest service rounded them all up and relocated them we know not where. I really miss having them around. They were originally brounght to the area by prospectors when gold was discovered a hundred some odd years ago. When the gold panned out, they left the area leaving the burros behind.

NIce portrait of the little fellow - nice comp and eyes are in focus. I do have one suggestion... I went to a photo seminar yesterday given by Rick Sammon. One thing he talked about photographing animals it to try and get some "catch light" into their eyes. You can get this when the animal looks up towards the sky (probably not a good solution for Sampson) or you can use some fill flash - with the flash power set down qutie a bit -maybe -1.67 EV.

@PD: Thanks and good idea. Maybe I'll try a flash next time. We have entered the gray zone (aka winter) here and may not see the sun again for awhile.

Can a mule be cute? This one sure seems to fit the bill and did a fine job of making me laugh out loud! Great portrait. I love the splash of purple color from his blanket. And the sprinkle of snow on his muzzle is quite endearing. Welcome to the family, Sampson! :)
